Bro. Raymond Baranco, Sr

Bro. Raymond Baranco, Sr. (September 29, 1890 – December 19, 1958)  A physician ,  civic leader and medical director of Southern University since the school’s founding in 1914 until 1958  was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was the son of Beverly V. Baranco, Jr. a local fraternal leader after whom the Baranco-Clark YMCA branch was named. He was educated at local schools in the Baton Rouge area and is a graduate of Meharry Medical College. He also served in the army during World War I as a first lieutenant. He served as a speaker of the house of delegates of the National Medical Association, a past president of the Louisiana Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association and a member of the St. Agnes Council Knights of Peter Claver.  Bro.  Baranco, Sr also directed the Good Samaritans, an organization which each Christmas collects funds and distributes toys and clothing to needy children.  He also held memberships in Rho Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the American Legion, The Louisiana Education Association and the John A. Andrew Chemical Society of Tuskegee Institute, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity and was the past president of the Epsilon Chapter of the Tri Delta Mu honorary medical fraternity.
