Dr. Charles Bowers, Sr.
Bro. Dr. Charles Bowers, Sr. was born in Houma, Louisiana on June 6, 1891. He graduated from New Orleans University (now Dillard University) in 1915 with his bachelor’s degree and again in 1923 with his master’s degree. He was an active member of Rho Phi Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Bro. Dr. Bowers, Sr. was also a graduate of Meharry Medical School. Shortly after graduating with his medical degree, Bowers became a physician at Flint-Goodridge Hospital and was later promoted to be the chief of medical staff, director of state and city venereal disease, and admitting officer and director of Out-Patient-Clinics.
Bro. Dr. Bowers, Sr. became Dillard University’s university staff physician from 1935-1969. Throughout his life, Bowers received numerous awards for his service in the medical field and volunteer efforts in the greater New Orleans community. He lived in New Orleans until his death on July 29, 1969. He is also the father of Bro. Dr. Charles Bowers, Jr, who was initiated into the fraternity on 12/18/1953.
